According to research and studies conducted by Dr Abdul-Latif Hamdan of the American University of Beirut the longer a woman fasts, the lower her voice gets and the less she uses it.
These studies were conducted on Muslim women fasting during the month of Ramadan.
The fast requires them to abstain from both food and water.
28 healthy women were studied by Lebanese researchers during Ramadan fasts to study how voices change.
The voices of these women were studied before as well as after the fast and compared by the researchers. The women’s voices were analyzed acoustically and their larynxes were inspected by video-endostroboscopy .The women also were asked to describe how easy or difficult it was to speak during the fast.
These are the findings of the study
- Unable to say anything while fasting was the common complaint, made by 23 of the women.
- Vocal Fatigue was another complaint made by half of the women.
- Lowering of the voice, was the next most common symptom of fasting which was seen in one-fifth of the fasting women.
- A few of the women also showed some harshening of their voices.
- According to the study the effect of fasting on the voice is more a result of dehydration than anything else. This is because dehydration tends to make the vocal chords less efficient.
The bottom line, say the researchers, is “fasting affects voice”.
