How you end your fast, in a great way determines the benefits you receive from your fast.
What most of us do is indulge ourselves in a huge hard to digest meal before and after the fast. This is one of the greatest mistakes we do.
During a long fast the digestive system shuts down partially or completely. All energy is redirected. The stomach and intestines are cleared of toxins. A thorough fast cleans out even the good bacteria which help in digestion of food. It is therefore necessary that the digestive system should be given time to prepare itself forsolid food again.
The juices that are taken for breaking the fast should be bottled or heated. Fresh juices should be avoided as they consist of active enzymes which when consumed prove to be a shock to the system. Bottled fruit juice on the other hand is usually pasteurized; therefore, the enzymes in them are deactivated. Fruit drinks with sugar or other sweeteners should be avoided
However this is applicable to fasts of five days or longer only. A shorter fast will generally not destroy the bacteria or shut down the digestive system.
Shorter fasts can be broken through the consumption of fresh fruits. Fresh fruits help in eliminating toxins which are released during a short fast.
Apart from juices, dairy products also can be consumed. They contain “good” bacteria which help in restoring the intestinal flora.
