What is Fasting Blood Sugar?

The blood sugar level refers to the presence of glucose in the blood.Glucose is the primary source of energy for our body cells.In a normal human being the Fasting Blood Sugar level should be less than 110 mg/dl.This article tries to understand the nuances of Fasting Blood Sugar level test.

The Fasting Blood Sugar Level Test:

This test is conducted in two stages,namely the pre-fast and the post fast stage.

The Pre-Fast Stage:

This test is conducted when a person fasts for 8 to 10 hrs.

In such a stage, his blood sugar sample is taken.

If the glucose level is between 70 to 99 mg/dL, it is termed as normal fasting glucose.

If the glucose level is between 100 to 125 mg/dL , it is termed as pre-diabetic stage.

If the glucose level is 126 mg/dL and more, the person is advised to carry out another FBS test before his diabetic status is confirmed.

The Post-Fast Stage:

The person is allowed to take food.As a result the blood sugar level raises in his body.A sample of the blood in this stage is collected.

If the glucose level is less than 140 mg/dL, it is termed as normal fasting glucose.

If the glucose level is between 140 to 200 mg/dL , it is termed as pre – diabetic stage.

If the glucose level is 200 mg/dL and more , the person’s diabetic status is confirmed.

The presence of glucose in the blood is to be well regulated for the normal functioning of the body.It is kept in check by a hormone called Insulin released by the pancreas.When the body do not recognize the Insulin produced or the produced Insulin is inadequate, it leads to a disease called Diabetes.
