Fasting

Types Of Fasting In The Bible

Fasting wasn’t unusual for people of biblical times. In the ancient times, the believers fasted periodically for many reasons. There are many types of fasting in the bible that were done for the reasons such as penitence, spiritual purification, preparation to unite with God and deliverance.

Fasting should always accompany inward repentance and never be used as a physical discipline to make body look better.

The four major types of fasting in the Bible are discussed below:

Regular Fasting -

This means to refrain from eating all food. But, some people drink juice or water during regular fasting. This type of fasting is referred to a verse in the Bible when Jesus fasted in the desert, which says

“After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”

This doesn’t refer anything about Jesus being thirsty.

Full Fasting -

This type of fasting means a complete no to food and water. In the Bible, it is said that

Paul was on a full fast for three days

after his encounter with Jesus on the Road to Damascus. Even Esther performed this type of fast as said in the Bible. This type of fast is not extended for periods but is done with extreme caution and belief.

Partial Fasting -

This type of fast means to cut down a specific meal from the diet or refrain from some food types. The book Daniel from the scripture says,

“At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks, I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.”

. Another verse in the same book of Daniel says,

“ Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.”

here the fasting is restricted only to vegetables and water.

Sexual Fasting -

The Bible says in the book of Corinthians that

“The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.”

Both should not deprive against each other and always should be devoted to prayer. Fasting for the partner’s well being and spiritual life is the sexual fast.

Fasting is also done to stay away from other activities. Most of the people concentrate on prayer to give up other entertainments in life such as watching movies or TV. Some others fast to stay away from another activity like sleeping.
